The future tense for regular verbs (-rai, -ras)

Forming the Futur Simple

To talk about distant plans and ambitions, French uses the futur simple (simple future).

For regular -er and -ir verbs, forming the future tense is simple: take the full infinitive (like choisir or réaliser) and add the future endings.

PronounFuture EndingExample (choisir)
je-aichoisirai
tu-aschoisiras
il / elle / on-achoisira
nous-onschoisirons
vous-ezchoisirez
ils / elles-ontchoisiront

Notice how the endings attach to the final "r" of the infinitive, creating the characteristic -rai and -ras sounds for je and tu.

Let's see this in action to talk about a profession (un métier) and the future (un avenir).

I will choose a good profession for my future.
Je choisirai un bon métier pour mon avenir.
You will achieve a very important goal for your future.
Tu réaliseras un but très important pour ton avenir.

Progressing in Your Career

The same pattern applies to other pronouns like il/elle and nous. Just attach the appropriate ending directly to the full infinitive of the verb.

He will progress quickly in his new career.
Il progressera vite dans sa nouvelle carrière.
We will progress a lot in this difficult field.
Nous progresserons beaucoup dans ce domaine difficile.
You will earn a bigger salary than your colleague.
Tu gagneras un salaire plus important que ton collègue.

Big Ambitions

Verbs like inventer (to invent) and fonder (to found or create) follow this exact same rule.

I will invent a truly original product.
J'inventerai un produit vraiment original.
You will found a large company and you will invent new things.
Tu fonderas une grande entreprise et tu inventeras de nouvelles choses.
We will choose this profession for the salary, right?
Nous choisirons ce métier pour le salaire, pas vrai ?
