Making Adjectives Plural
In French, adjectives must agree with the nouns they describe. If you are describing a plural noun, the adjective must also be plural.
For most adjectives, simply add a silent -s to the end. Because the -s is silent, the spoken word usually sounds exactly the same as the singular form.
| The people here are very funny. | Les gens ici sont très drôles. |
| The students are free now. | Les étudiants sont libres maintenant. |
| The girls are always shy. | Les filles sont toujours timides. |
Mixed-Gender Groups
What happens when you want to describe a group that includes both masculine and feminine nouns?
In French, the masculine form is the default for mixed groups. If a group contains both masculine and feminine people or objects—even just one masculine noun in a large group of feminine ones—the describing adjective takes the masculine plural form.
| The boy and the girl are ready. | Le garçon et la fille sont prêts. |
| The man and the woman are busy. | L'homme et la femme sont occupés. |
