Plural adjective agreement (+s)

Making Adjectives Plural

In French, adjectives must agree with the nouns they describe. If you are describing a plural noun, the adjective must also be plural.

For most adjectives, simply add a silent -s to the end. Because the -s is silent, the spoken word usually sounds exactly the same as the singular form.

The people here are very funny.
Les gens ici sont très drôles.
The students are free now.
Les étudiants sont libres maintenant.
The girls are always shy.
Les filles sont toujours timides.

Mixed-Gender Groups

What happens when you want to describe a group that includes both masculine and feminine nouns?

In French, the masculine form is the default for mixed groups. If a group contains both masculine and feminine people or objects—even just one masculine noun in a large group of feminine ones—the describing adjective takes the masculine plural form.

The boy and the girl are ready.
Le garçon et la fille sont prêts.
The man and the woman are busy.
L'homme et la femme sont occupés.
