Negative adverbs (ne... plus)

No longer: ne... plus

To say that you "no longer" do something or do not do it "anymore", use ne... plus. It works exactly like the basic negative ne... pas: the two words simply wrap around the conjugated verb. If the verb starts with a vowel, ne becomes n'.

I no longer have this bad habit.
Je n'ai plus cette mauvaise habitude.
I no longer eat fatty food, it is a bad habit.
Je ne mange plus gras, c'est une mauvaise habitude.
You do not go to bed late anymore.
Vous ne vous couchez plus tard.

Making resolutions

When talking about breaking bad habits or making a resolution (une résolution), you can also use the verb arrêter followed by de to say you are stopping an action.

It is my resolution: I am quitting smoking.
C'est ma résolution : j'arrête de fumer.
We are quitting smoking to improve our health.
Nous arrêtons de fumer pour améliorer notre santé.

"No more" of something

Just like with ne... pas, when you use ne... plus to say you are no longer consuming or buying a certain noun, indefinite articles (un, une, des) and partitive articles (du, de la) change to de. If the noun starts with a vowel sound, it becomes d'.

She does not buy cigarettes anymore.
Elle n'achète plus de cigarettes.
We have a good resolution: we do not buy candies anymore.
Nous avons une bonne résolution : nous n'achetons plus de bonbons.
I no longer spend money, I no longer have stress!
Je ne dépense plus d'argent, je n'ai plus de stress !
