Expressing "Neither... Nor..."
To say "neither... nor...", use the negative structure ne... ni... ni....
Place ne (or n') before the verb, and use ni directly before each rejected option.
| I like neither silk nor cotton. | Je n'aime ni la soie ni le coton. |
| He wants neither the blue shirt nor the red pants. | Il ne veut ni la chemise bleue ni le pantalon rouge. |
Dropping Articles
Definite articles (le, la, les) and possessive adjectives (mon, ma, etc.) remain intact after ni. However, indefinite articles (un, une, des) and partitive articles (du, de la) are dropped entirely.
| Before going out, I find neither my jacket nor my coat. | Avant de sortir, je ne trouve ni ma veste ni mon manteau. |
| She wears neither wool nor leather. | Elle ne porte ni laine ni cuir. |
Negating Adjectives
You can also use ne... ni... ni... with adjectives by placing ni right before each one.
| This outfit is neither plain nor striped. | Cette tenue n'est ni unie ni rayée. |
| The uniform will be neither formal nor casual. | L'uniforme ne sera ni formel ni décontracté. |
