Logical connector for contradiction (or)

In this lesson, we will look at how to discuss and debunk conspiracy theories (les théories du complot).

This message spreads a new conspiracy theory.
Ce message diffuse une nouvelle théorie du complot.

The Logical Connector "Or"

When you want to present a counter-argument or introduce a new fact that contradicts a previous claim, French uses the logical connector or.

Although it looks exactly like the English word "or," it actually translates to "yet," "however," or "now" (in the logical sense of "Now, the truth is..."). It is used to pivot a line of reasoning, often sitting at the very beginning of a sentence and followed by a comma.

Yet, this conspiracy is absolutely absurd.
Or, ce complot est absolument absurde.

Let's look at how or is used to transition between a false claim and a contradictory fact:

They claim that the earth is flat.
Ils affirment que la terre est plate.
Yet, science proves that the earth is round.
Or, la science prouve que la terre est ronde.

Building an Argument

When dismantling a hoax or false claim, or acts as the turning point between the flawed premise and the verifiable truth.

Their analysis claims that the danger is real.
Leur analyse affirme que le danger est réel.
Yet, a real analysis is always verifiable.
Or, une analyse réelle est toujours vérifiable.
