"Someone" and "something"
When investigating a mystery, you don't always know all the details. To talk about an unknown person, use quelqu'un (someone). For an unknown object, use quelque chose (something).
These indefinite pronouns are used in affirmative statements and can act as either the subject or the object of a sentence.
| During the investigation, someone steals a document. | Pendant l'enquête, quelqu'un vole un document. |
| The detective observes something. | Le détective observe quelque chose. |
Gathering clues
Notice how quelqu'un and quelque chose can be used together to describe suspicious activity:
| Someone is hiding something under the table. | Quelqu'un cache quelque chose sous la table. |
| Someone has just found a clue here. | Quelqu'un vient de trouver un indice ici. |
Keep your eyes peeled for things left behind by the thief, like une empreinte (a fingerprint) or une preuve (evidence).
