Stylistic Exclamations with Inversion
While you can use standard exclamations like Comme il est beau ! (How beautiful he is!), written and high-register French offers a stylistic alternative: exclamative inversion. By inverting the verb and subject pronoun before an adjective, you create a refined exclamation.
The structure is simply: Verb - Subject Pronoun + Adjective !
| The horse listens to the rider. Is he ever docile! | Le cheval écoute le cavalier. Est-il docile ! |
Notice the hyphen linking the verb (est) and the inverted subject pronoun (il). This phrasing translates smoothly to "Is he ever...!" or "How... he is!" in English.
| The animal begins the trot. Is he ever agile! | L'animal commence le trot. Est-il agile ! |
When referring to a feminine noun like the horse's mane (la crinière), use the feminine pronoun elle and ensure the adjective agrees:
| I admire the horse's mane. Is it ever beautiful! | J'admire la crinière du cheval. Est-elle belle ! |
You can also add extra context to these exclamations by attaching phrases after the adjective:
| How agile he is during the dressage without the reins! | Est-il agile pendant le dressage sans les rênes ! |
