The relative pronoun "que"
You previously learned to use qui when the relative pronoun is the subject of the clause. When the pronoun is the direct object, use que instead.
Que translates to "that," "which," or "whom." Use it when the relative clause already has its own subject (like je, tu, vous, or a noun) performing the action.
| What is the piece of jewelry that you prefer? | Quel est le bijou que vous préférez ? |
| This is a precious piece of jewelry that I admire a lot. |
"Que" becomes "qu'"
Que drops its -e and adds an apostrophe (qu') when the following word begins with a vowel or mute h.
| The precious treasures that they hide are very old. |
| The diamond necklace that he is going to give is magnificent. |
Describing items with "que"
Relative clauses with que are perfect for pointing out exactly which item you are describing.
| Do you like the pearl earrings that I am wearing? |
| The diamond watch that you are looking at is a treasure. |
