Questions & Answers about Valitsin tämän halvemman jousen mekanismin varaosaksi.
Why does varaosa take the translative ending -ksi in this sentence?
This is the translative of intended purpose. When you acquire, choose, or give something to act as or for the purpose of being something else, Finnish uses the translative case. Here, the spring was chosen specifically to serve the purpose of a spare part (varaosaksi).
Why is the object tämän halvemman jousen in the genitive (accusative) case instead of the partitive?
The verb valita (to choose) is a resultative verb, meaning it expresses an action carried through to completion. Because you are choosing one whole, complete item (this specific spring), the total object takes the genitive case. You would only use the partitive if you were choosing from an uncountable mass.
How do we know mekanismin modifies the spare part and not the spring?
In Finnish, a genitive modifier almost always sits immediately before the noun it describes. Because mekanismin is placed directly before varaosaksi, it means "a spare part for the mechanism." If you wanted to say "the mechanism's spring," the word order would need to be mekanismin jousen.
