Questions & Answers about Sähkökatkon johdosta emme kykene soittamaan apua.
Why use johdosta here instead of more common words like takia or vuoksi?
Johdosta is a formal postposition meaning 'due to' or 'as a result of'. While takia or vuoksi (because of) would be grammatically correct, johdosta specifically emphasizes that the situation is a direct, logical consequence of a specific event. It gives the sentence the formal tone of an official announcement.
Does johdosta always require the genitive case?
Yes. Like the other formal postpositions of cause in this lesson (vuoksi and ansiosta), johdosta requires the word it modifies to be in the genitive case. That is why sähkökatko (power outage) becomes sähkökatkon.
Why is the verb soittaa in the -maan form (soittamaan) instead of its basic dictionary form?
The verb kyetä (to be able to / to be capable of) strongly dictates the form of the verb that follows it. It always requires the illative form of the third infinitive, which ends in -maan or -mään. You will see this exact same rule applied with the more common synonym pystyä.
What is the base verb for kykene, and how is this negative form built?
