Questions & Answers about Löydätkö mustekalan syvästä vedestä?
Why is syvästä vedestä in the elative (from) case rather than the inessive (in) case?
In Finnish, the verb löytää (to find) expresses the idea of a result appearing from a location. Just like with etsiä (to search), you find something out of somewhere. So instead of finding an octopus in the water (vedessä), you find it from the deep water (syvästä vedestä).
Why does mustekala take the -n ending here to become mustekalan?
The -n ending marks the accusative case, which looks exactly like the genitive case for singular nouns. It shows that the octopus is the total object of the action. You are asking about finding a whole, individual octopus. If you were asking about finding an indefinite amount of octopus, you would use the partitive case (mustekalaa).
Where did the 't' from the basic verb löytää go in löydätkö?
This is a classic example of consonant gradation that learners sometimes trip over when adding clitics. When you add the personal ending -t for 'you', the syllable becomes closed. This triggers the strong 't' in löytää to weaken to a 'd', giving us löydät. The question clitic -kö is then simply attached to that already-conjugated form.
Is mustekala a compound word?
Yes, and it translates very literally, which makes it easy to remember! Muste means ink, and kala means fish. So an octopus (or a squid) is simply an ink-fish.
