Questions & Answers about Tein tärkeän havainnon observatoriossa.
Why do tärkeän and havainnon end in -n instead of being in the partitive case?
They form the total object of the sentence. Because the action is completed (you made one specific, complete observation rather than an ongoing process), the object takes the genitive-accusative ending -n. If the action were ongoing, you would use the partitive: Tein tärkeää havaintoa.
What is the dictionary form of havainnon, and what triggers its spelling change?
The dictionary form is havainto (observation). Adding the -n object ending closes the final syllable, which triggers consonant gradation. The strong -nt- weakens to -nn-, resulting in havainnon.
If we used this sentence to explain a previous statement using the lesson's target word nimittäin (because / namely), where would it go?
It would typically go right after the first verb, making it Tein nimittäin tärkeän havainnon observatoriossa. Unlike the English word 'because', nimittäin almost never starts a sentence; it prefers this delayed second-position placement.
How does the noun havainto relate to its root verb, and what is that verb?
