Questions & Answers about Kuparinen työkalu lienee löydetty kaivaukselta.
How do lienee and löydetty work together to mean "was probably found"?
This sentence uses the potential passive perfect structure. Lienee is the potential mood of olla (meaning "is probably"), acting as the auxiliary verb. Löydetty is the passive past participle of löytää ("to find"). Together, they express that an action was probably done to an object in the past.
Why is kuparinen työkalu in the nominative case if it is the object being found?
In Finnish passive sentences, a complete object is placed in the nominative case rather than the standard genitive-accusative. Because the entire tool was found, both the noun työkalu and its modifying adjective kuparinen stay in the nominative.
How is the adjective kuparinen formed?
It is formed by adding the adjective-forming suffix -nen to the noun kupari (copper). Attaching -nen to a material noun is the standard Finnish way to express that an object is "made of" a specific material.
Why does the sentence use the ablative case kaivaukselta ("from the excavation") when the English translation says "at the excavation"?
