Questions & Answers about Tämä mysteeri lienee pelottanut jälkeläisiä.
How does lienee pelottanut express the past tense in this sentence?
It uses the potential perfect construction. Instead of a standard past tense, it combines lienee (the potential mood of olla for the third-person singular, meaning "probably is") with pelottanut (the past active participle of pelottaa). Together, they form the meaning "probably frightened" or "may have frightened".
Why do we use pelottaa here instead of the more common verb for fear, pelätä?
Pelottaa is a causative verb meaning "to frighten" or "to scare", so the subject (the mystery) is the thing causing the fear. If you used pelätä (to fear), the subject would be the one experiencing the fear. For example, Jälkeläiset pelkäsivät mysteeriä would mean "The descendants feared the mystery."
Why is the object jälkeläisiä in the partitive case?
Verbs expressing an emotion or feeling, such as pelottaa (to frighten), rakastaa (to love), or vihata (to hate), almost always take a partitive object. This is because the emotional effect is seen as an ongoing, abstract process rather than a completed physical action with a definite end.
