Questions & Answers about Uutinen sensuroitiin eilen.
Why is the object uutinen in the nominative case instead of ending in -n?
This is the passive object case drop in action! When a verb is in the passive voice (like sensuroitiin), a total object that would normally take the -n ending (the genitive-accusative) drops that ending and stays in the basic nominative case.
Would it ever be correct to use the partitive case here, like uutista?
Yes! If only some of the news was censored, or if the censoring was an ongoing, unfinished process, you would use the partitive: Uutista sensuroitiin eilen. The nominative uutinen tells us that the entire news story was completely censored in a finished action.
How do we build the passive past tense form sensuroitiin?
The verb is sensuroida (to censor), which is a type 2 verb. To form the passive past, you take the infinitive stem sensuroi- and simply add the passive past ending -tiin.
In English, news is usually treated as an uncountable concept. Is uutinen singular or plural?
Uutinen is strictly singular, referring to one specific news story or article. If you were talking about the news as a general broadcast or multiple stories, you would use the plural uutiset, making the sentence: Uutiset sensuroitiin eilen. Notice that plural nominative objects also do not take an -n marker!
