Questions & Answers about Sinun kannattaa käydä optikolla vuosittain.
Why is the word for optician in the adessive case (optikolla), meaning "at", when the English translation says "visit the optician"?
In Finnish, the verb käydä (to visit) is a bit special: it requires a static location case. We use "in" or "at" instead of "to". Even though you are going to the optician, with käydä you express it as visiting at the optician. If you used the verb mennä (to go), you would use the directional "to" case: mennä optikolle.
Since käydä uses a static location case, why do we use the adessive -lla (at) instead of the inessive -ssa (in)?
When you visit a person, a professional, or an open space (like a doctor, hairdresser, or optician), Finnish usually uses the adessive ending -lla/-llä. You are visiting at the optician's clinic, not physically inside the optician.
Why does the sentence start with the genitive sinun (your) instead of the nominative sinä (you)?
This happens because of the verb kannattaa (to be worthwhile / should). Like täytyy and pitää, kannattaa is a necessity verb. The person who "should" do the action must be in the genitive case (sinun), and the verb itself stays frozen in the third-person singular rather than taking a personal ending.
How is the word vuosittain (annually) formed?
The suffix -ttain/-ttäin is attached to a word stem to mean "every" or to form an adverb of frequency. Here, it is added to the plural stem of vuosi (year) to make vuosittain (annually / year by year). You will also see this suffix in similar words like päivittäin (daily) or viikoittain (weekly).
