Questions & Answers about Chili poltti haastajan suuta.
Why is suuta in the partitive case here?
The verb polttaa (to burn) takes a partitive object when describing a physical sensation, like spicy food burning your mouth, because it is an ongoing action without a definite endpoint. If you used the total object (suun), it would imply the chili completely incinerated or destroyed the mouth!
How is the word haastajan built?
It comes from the verb haastaa (to challenge). By adding the suffix -ja, it becomes the noun haastaja (challenger), similar to adding '-er' to a verb in English. Here it is in the genitive case (haastajan) to show possession over the mouth.
Why does the verb polttaa become poltti in this sentence?
This is the past tense (imperfect) form for the third-person singular ('it burned'). When forming the past tense, the final -a of the verb stem changes to an -i, making polttaa become poltti.
If I wanted to say 'This kind of chili burned the challenger's mouth', how would I use the demonstrative adjectives from this lesson?
You would use tällainen (this kind of). Because it modifies the subject chili, which is in the basic nominative case, the adjective also stays in the nominative: Tällainen chili poltti haastajan suuta.
