Questions & Answers about Toimittaja kysyy huhusta.
Why does this sentence use the elative case (huhusta) to mean "about the rumor"?
In Finnish, verbs related to thinking, speaking, and inquiring (cognitive verbs) often take the elative case (-sta/-stä) to express what the action is "about". Kysyä (to ask) is one of these verbs. So, kysyä huhusta translates to "to ask about the rumor".
What if the journalist were asking for a rumor rather than about one? Would the case change?
Yes! If you are asking for something, the verb kysyä usually takes the partitive case. For example, Toimittaja kysyy apua means "The journalist asks for help". Using the elative (huhusta) specifically changes the meaning to asking about the subject.
If the journalist is asking a specific person about the rumor, how do we express who they are asking?
The person being asked is put in the ablative case (-lta/-ltä). For example, "The journalist asks the politician about the rumor" would be Toimittaja kysyy poliitikolta huhusta. You don't use the allative case (-lle) for the person being asked, which is a common mistake for English speakers.
The word toimittaja looks like an "actor" noun. What verb is it built from?
It comes from the verb toimittaa, which means "to deliver", "to supply", or "to edit" (like a newspaper or broadcast). By adding the agent suffix -ja, it becomes "one who edits or reports"—in this case, a journalist.
