Questions & Answers about Katua kaivettaessa nopeusrajoitus on tärkein asia.
How is the word kaivettaessa formed, and what does it mean?
Kaivettaessa is the passive form of the temporal construction (temporaalirakenne) for the verb kaivaa (to dig). You form it by taking the passive past participle kaivettu, changing the final -u to -a, and adding the inessive ending -essa. It translates to "when (something) is being dug."
Why is katua in the partitive case here?
Katua is the object of the digging action. Because kaivaa (to dig) is an ongoing, incomplete action in this context (the street is being dug up), its object must be in the partitive case.
How does the word tärkein relate to the base adjective tärkeä (important)?
Tärkein is the superlative form, meaning "the most important." To form the superlative for two-syllable adjectives ending in -a or -ä, you drop that final vowel (the -ä from tärkeä) and add the superlative marker -in.
