Questions & Answers about Tämä profiili on kiusallinen.
How would I apply this lesson's topic, 'ei kumpikaan', to say 'Neither profile is awkward'?
You would say Kumpikaan profiili ei ole kiusallinen. The word kumpikaan (neither) takes the nominative case here and pairs with the negative verb ei ole. Notice that the noun profiili remains in the singular.
Can I use kiusallinen to say a person is physically awkward and trips over things?
No, kiusallinen means 'awkward' in a social or emotional sense, like an embarrassing situation or an uncomfortable profile. If you want to describe someone who is physically clumsy, you should use the word kömpelö.
Is kiusallinen related to the verb kiusata (to bully or tease)?
Yes! Both come from the root word kiusa, which means a nuisance, bother, or teasing. The suffix -llinen turns a noun into an adjective, so kiusallinen describes something that causes discomfort or embarrassment.
Why isn't the adjective in the partitive case (kiusallista)?
We use the nominative case (kiusallinen) because profiili is a discrete, countable noun. If the subject were an uncountable mass word like 'music' (for example, 'This music is awkward'), the adjective would take the partitive case: Tämä musiikki on kiusallista.
