Questions & Answers about Laulava lintu rakentaa pesää.
How exactly do we form the word laulava from the verb laulaa?
It is the active present participle, formed by taking the verb's strong stem and adding -va or -vä. For laulaa (to sing), the stem is laula-, so we just add -va to get laulava (singing). It acts exactly like an adjective describing the bird.
Is laulava lintu different from saying lintu, joka laulaa?
The meaning is identical! Lintu, joka laulaa means "the bird that sings," while laulava lintu means "the singing bird." The -va participle is just a more compact way to express a continuous action as an adjective.
Why is the object pesää in the partitive case here?
Because the action is ongoing and incomplete. The bird is currently in the process of building the nest. If the bird had finished building the nest, we would use the accusative case (pesän) to show the action was totally completed.
I remember the verb is rakentaa with an 'nt'. Why doesn't it change to 'nn' here like in rakennan (I build)?
Because this is the third-person singular (he/she/it builds). Rakentaa is a Type 1 verb, which means it uses the strong consonant grade (nt) in the third person, but the weak grade (nn) in the first and second person.
