Questions & Answers about Suositteletko hyviä vihkoja?
Why is "notebooks" vihkoja with a -ja instead of just -a or -ia?
It is in the partitive plural. The base word is vihko. For words ending in -o or -ö, the plural marker -i- changes to -j- because it sits between two vowels (o and a). So, vihko + plural i + partitive a becomes vihkoja.
Why does hyviä use -i- but vihkoja uses -j-?
Both actually use the same plural marker! In hyviä (base form hyvä), the final ä drops out before the plural i, so the i is only next to one vowel (hyv-i-ä). In vihko, the final o stays. Because the plural i gets squished between two vowels (vihko-i-a), Finnish turns the i into a j to make it smoother to pronounce.
Why do "good notebooks" have to be in the partitive case here?
The verb suositella (to recommend) is a partitive verb. Whenever you recommend something, the thing you are recommending must be in the partitive case. Because you are asking about an unspecified number of multiple notebooks, we use the partitive plural.
How is the verb suositteletko built?
The base verb is suositella (to recommend), which is a Type 3 verb. To find the stem, you remove the -lla and add an -le-, giving the stem suosittele-. Then you add the "you" ending -t (suosittelet) and finally the question ending -ko to turn it into a yes/no question.
