Questions & Answers about Tämä manner on hyvin iso.
Wait, doesn't hyvin mean "well"? Why is it translated as "very" here?
You're right! Hyvin is the adverb form of hyvä (good), so it usually translates to "well". However, when placed right before an adjective, hyvin is very commonly used to mean "very", just like tosi or erittäin. So hyvin iso simply means "very big".
Since we are practicing the perfect tense, how would I say "This continent has been very big"?
To form the perfect tense, you need the helper verb olla (to be) in the present tense, plus the past participle (the -NUT/-NYT form) of your main verb. Since the main verb here is also olla, you use on plus ollut. The sentence becomes: Tämä manner on ollut hyvin iso.
What happens to the word manner (continent) if I want to add an ending, like saying "on the continent"?
Manner is a special type of noun. When you add most endings, the stem changes quite a bit to manteree-. So "on the continent" (using the ending -lla) becomes mantereella.
Could I use suuri instead of iso in this sentence?
