How do we get tarvitsin from the dictionary form tarvita?
Tarvita (to need) is a Type 5 verb. To form the past tense (imperfect), Type 5 verbs replace the final -ta or -tä of their dictionary form with -tsi-. This gives us the past stem tarvitsi-. Adding the personal ending -n for "I" makes it tarvitsin.
