How do we get the command varo from the dictionary word?
The dictionary form is varoa (Verb Type 1). To make a command for one person, you find the "I" form and drop the -n. Since "I watch out" is varon, dropping the -n gives us the command varo.
Why does the word for dog have an extra "a" at the end (koiraa)?
Koiraa is the partitive form of koira (dog). The verb varoa is a "partitive verb," meaning that the thing you are watching out for must always be in the partitive case.
How do you say the "out for" part of "watch out for"?
It is built right into the verb! The single Finnish word varoa covers the whole meaning of "to watch out for" or "to beware of." You don't need to add a separate preposition.
