Questions & Answers about Rakastan punaista viiniä!
Why do both 'red' and 'wine' have partitive endings?
In Finnish, adjectives must match the noun they describe in both number and case. Because viiniä is in the partitive case, the adjective punainen (red) must also be in the partitive case, becoming punaista.
How does punainen turn into punaista?
Words ending in -nen have a special rule. You drop the -nen, add an -s to make the word's stem, and then add the partitive ending. Here, the partitive ending is -ta, so punainen becomes punais- + -ta = punaista.
Why is 'red wine' in the partitive case here instead of the basic dictionary form?
The verb rakastaa (to love) is a verb of emotion. In Finnish, verbs expressing strong feelings always require the object of that feeling to be in the partitive case.
Why does punaista end with an -a but viiniä ends with an -ä?
