The Seasons
To say that something happens during a specific season, add the adessive ending (-lla/-llä). Notice how the stems change for winter and spring:
- kesä (summer) -> kesällä (in summer)
- syksy (autumn) -> syksyllä (in autumn)
- talvi (winter) -> talvella (in winter) (the i changes to e)
- kevät (spring) -> keväällä (in spring) (the stem becomes kevää-)
| In summer the weather is often warm. | Kesällä sää on usein lämmin. |
| In autumn the weather is cool and it rains a lot. | Syksyllä sää on viileä ja sataa paljon. |
| In winter the morning is very dark. | Talvella aamu on hyvin pimeä. |
Months of the Year
Unlike seasons, months take the inessive ending (-ssa/-ssä).
- kesäkuu (June) -> kesäkuussa (in June)
- tammikuu (January) -> tammikuussa (in January)
| In June the weather is beautiful and bright. | Kesäkuussa sää on kaunis ja valoisa. |
Talking About the Weather
When describing the weather (sää), use adjectives like lämmin (warm), viileä (cool), valoisa (bright), and pimeä (dark). To emphasize them, use hyvin (very).
| In Finland the night is very bright in summer. | Suomessa yö on kesällä hyvin valoisa. |
| In the dark room it is cold. | Pimeässä huoneessa on kylmä. |
No winter is complete without lumi (snow) and jää (ice).
| The snow is white and clean. | Lumi on valkoista ja puhdasta. |
| In spring the ice is not strong. | Keväällä jää ei ole vahva. |
