The Negative Participle (-maton / -mätön)

When you want to turn a verb into an adjective describing something that is undone or impossible to do—often translating to English words ending in "-able", "-less", or starting with "un-"—Finnish uses the negative participle.

To form it, start with the third-person plural present tense of the verb (the he form). Drop the -vat / -vät ending, and add -maton or -mätön (following vowel harmony).

• kuolla (to die) → he kuolevat → kuolematon (immortal)
• voittaa (to win / beat) → he voittavat → voittamaton (unbeatable)

This pattern works reliably across different verb types. Notice how it creates very expressive adjectives:

• arvata (to guess) → he arvaavat → arvaamaton (unpredictable)
• pysäyttää (to stop) → he pysäyttävät → pysäyttämätön (unstoppable)
• rikkoa (to break) → he rikkovat → rikkomaton (unbreakable)

Case Agreement

Because the negative participle functions exactly like an adjective, it must agree with the noun it describes in both case and number.

Before adding most case endings, the -maton / -mätön ending changes to its inflectional stem -mattoma- / -mättömä-.

For example, odottaa (to wait / expect) becomes odottamaton (unexpected). To put this into the translative case, use the stem: odottamattoma- + -ksi = odottamattomaksi.

To form the partitive case, the ending becomes -matonta / -mätöntä. For example, tuntea (to know) becomes tuntematon (unknown), and its partitive form is tuntematonta.
