Reflexive Verbs with -utua / -ytyä
In Finnish, you can often turn a regular verb into a reflexive verb by adding the suffix -utua or -ytyä (depending on vowel harmony). Reflexive verbs describe an action that the subject directs at themselves.
For example, vetää means "to pull", but vetäytyä means "to pull oneself" or "to retreat". Similarly, suojata (to protect) becomes suojautua (to protect oneself, or to take cover).
Conjugation and Consonant Gradation
Verbs ending in -utua or -ytyä belong to Verb Type 1. Because the suffix contains the consonant t, these verbs undergo consonant gradation when conjugated.
In closed syllables (when conjugating for minä, sinä, me, and te), the strong t softens to a weak d.
In open syllables (the hän and he forms, as well as the infinitive), the strong t remains unchanged.
Tactical Actions
This reflexive suffix is extremely common in tactical and security contexts where groups are positioning, preparing, or hiding themselves. Base verbs like aseistaa (to arm someone) and ryhmittää (to group someone) naturally become actions you do to yourself or as a unit.
