Sometimes you want to avoid an awkward encounter, so you fake a phone call or pretend to be deep in thought. In Finnish, expressing that someone is "pretending" to do something uses a unique structure known as the quasi-construction (kvasirakenne).
The Quasi-Construction (Kvasirakenne)
To say someone is pretending to do an action, combine the conjugated verb olla (to be) with a special form of the action verb: the present active participle base (-vina- / -vinä-) plus a possessive suffix.

For the third person (hän/he), the suffix blends into the base to form *-vinaan / -vinään.*

When the subject is hän or he, use the -vinaan / -vinään ending:

Pretending to Be Something
You can also use this construction with the verb olla itself to say someone is pretending to be something (like busy or asleep). The base for olla becomes olevina-.

Avoiding Awkward Encounters
This structure is highly useful when describing someone trying to avoid an awkward social encounter (kohtaaminen). You might pretend to fiddle with (näprätä) something or evade (vältellä) someone's gaze (katse) when you bump into (törmätä) them.
