All twelve months in Finnish end with the word kuu, which means both "moon" and "month". Unlike in English, month names are not capitalized unless they begin a sentence.
To say that something happens in a specific month, add the inessive case ending -ssa. Because kuu ends in a back vowel, the ending is always exactly the same: -kuussa.
| In January it is cold, and in February it rains often. | Tammikuussa on kylmä, ja helmikuussa sataa usein. |
| Are you here in January or February? | Oletteko täällä tammikuussa vai helmikuussa? |
When joining multiple months with words like ja (and) or tai (or), attach the -ssa ending to every month in the list.
| The sun shines a lot in March and April. | Aurinko paistaa paljon maaliskuussa ja huhtikuussa. |
| School ends in May or June. | Koulu loppuu toukokuussa tai kesäkuussa. |
| The student reads a lot in September and October. | Opiskelija lukee paljon syyskuussa ja lokakuussa. |
| In December we eat cake and drink wine. | Joulukuussa syömme kakkua ja juomme viiniä. |
