Extremes of position (-immainen / -immäinen)

Setting up a formal banquet requires a precise seating arrangement. When you need to direct a guest of honor to the exact right spot—whether it's the frontmost table or the rearmost corner—Finnish uses a specific suffix to express absolute extremes of position.

Extreme Positions (-immainen / -immäinen)

To describe the absolute extreme location of something, Finnish attaches the suffix -immainen or -immäinen to spatial roots.

For example, spatial concepts like yli (over/up) and ali (under/down) become the adjectives ylimmäinen (uppermost) and alimmainen (bottommost).

As always, vowel harmony applies: use -immainen for roots with back vowels (a, o, u), and -immäinen for roots with front vowels (ä, ö, y, e, i).

The seating arrangement is difficult, but the frontmost table is for the guests of honor.
Istumajärjestys on vaikea, mutta etimmäinen pöytä on kunniavieraille.
When you step into the banquet hall, the rearmost row is on the left.
Kun astut juhlasaliin, takimmainen rivi on vasemmalla.
The topmost floor is quiet, but the bottommost is noisy.
Ylimmäinen kerros on hiljainen, mutta alimmainen on meluisa.

Declining and Matching Cases

Because these adjectives end in -nen, they follow the standard rule for -nen words: the ending changes to -se- before any case suffixes are attached.

Like all adjectives, they must agree with the noun they modify. If a guest is sitting in the rearmost corner, both the adjective and the noun take the inessive (-ssa / -ssä) ending.

The guest whose name card is missing sits in the rearmost corner.
Vieras, jonka nimikortti puuttuu, istuu perimmäisessä nurkassa.

When describing possession or relationships, you will use the genitive case (-n), changing the ending to -sen.

The outermost chair of the lowest row is yours.
Alimmaisen rivin reunimmainen tuoli on sinun.

If you need to use a plural case, the stem -se- combines with the plural marker -i- to become -si-. For example, when talking about sitting on the middlemost chairs, the adessive plural (-lla / -llä) is attached to the -si- stem.

Are we sitting in the middlemost or the outermost chairs?
Istummeko me keskimmäisillä vai reunimmaisilla tuoleilla?
