Equative Comparison ("As... As")
When you want to say that two things are equal in a certain quality—such as saying one product is "as affordable as" another—Finnish uses the structure yhtä ... kuin.
To form this comparison, place the adjective or adverb you are focusing on directly between the two words:
- yhtä (as / equally)
- [adjective]
- kuin (as / than)
| This brand is as affordable as that one. | Tämä merkki on yhtä edullinen kuin tuo. |
| This version is as advanced as that one. | Tämä versio on yhtä kehittynyt kuin tuo. |
Negative Comparisons
To express that something is "not as [quality] as" something else, simply negate the main verb in the sentence (usually olla, to be). The yhtä ... kuin structure itself stays exactly the same.
| The new version is not as durable as the old one. | Uusi versio ei ole yhtä kestävä kuin vanha. |
Expanding the Comparison
You can easily compare multiple qualities at once by linking adjectives with ja (and) inside the structure.
| This device is as practical and handy as a phone. | Tämä laite on yhtä käytännöllinen ja näppärä kuin puhelin. |
If you want to emphasize that something is exactly or just as good as the alternative, you can add an emphasizing word like aivan (quite / exactly) directly before yhtä.
| This model is not as affordable, but it is just as advanced. | Tämä malli ei ole yhtä edullinen, mutta se on aivan yhtä kehittynyt. |
