Automative verbs (-oitua, -öityä)

In the digital world, systems adapt on the fly and processes often happen automatically. To express that something transforms, adapts, or activates on its own, Finnish uses the highly productive automative suffix -oitua (or -öityä).

Forming Automative Verbs

You can attach this suffix to adjectives, nouns, and international loanwords to create new verbs meaning "to become [X]" or "to act automatically". The choice between -oitua and -öityä follows standard vowel harmony rules. Since they end in -a / -ä, these belong to Verb Type 1.

For example, international words like aktiivinen (active) and passiivinen (passive) seamlessly become the verbs aktivoitua (to become active) and passivoitua (to become passive).

The algorithm becomes active when the user clicks the link.
Algoritmi aktivoituu, kun käyttäjä klikkaa linkkiä.
If you do not use the service, the account becomes passive.
Jos et käytä palvelua, tili passivoituu.

Personalization and Individualization

This suffix is incredibly useful for talking about algorithms and user experiences. By attaching it to the nouns henkilö (person) and yksilö (individual), you get verbs that describe content personalizing itself to the user.

The application becomes personalized for you when you use it.
Sovellus henkilöityy sinulle, kun käytät sitä.
The experience becomes individualized in all the applications that we use.
Kokemus yksilöityy kaikissa sovelluksissa, joita käytämme.

Automation and Networking

The suffix also neatly handles complex systemic changes. The root for automatic becomes automatisoitua (to become automated), while the noun verkosto (network) turns into the verb verkostoitua (to network, or to form a network).

All work becomes automated, for artificial intelligence develops.
Kaikki työ automatisoituu, sillä tekoäly kehittyy.
Bots network with each other in social media.
Botit verkostoituvat toistensa kanssa sosiaalisessa mediassa.

Tailoring the Feed

In tech contexts, you will often interact with a syöte (feed). When a feed adjusts to your preferences, Finnish uses the verb räätälöityä (to become tailored), derived from the traditional noun räätäli (tailor).

The feed becomes tailored for each user.
Syöte räätälöityy jokaiselle käyttäjälle.

Like all verbs, these automative verbs can be used freely in different tenses—such as the past tense—or in their basic infinitive form when paired with an auxiliary verb. Notice how this works when discussing concepts like data (data).

Without data, the algorithm cannot become tailored.
Ilman dataa algoritmi ei voi räätälöityä.
Your feed became passive, for you did not update it.
Sinun syötteesi passivoitui, sillä et päivittänyt sitä.
