Why does a singular-looking word like baghiye take the plural verb hastand?
In Farsi, words that describe a group of people (like "the rest" or "the others") often take a plural verb. Since baghiye here means "the other people," it pairs with hastand (they are).
Does baghiye only mean "the other people", or can I use it for things?
You can use it for both! In this lesson you've seen kasi (someone) for people and chizi (something) for things. baghiye is flexible and means "the rest" of whatever you are talking about, whether that is the rest of your friends or the rest of your food.
Why didn't we use the plural ending -hâ on baghiye to make it "the others"?
baghiye already means "the rest" or "the remainder" as a whole concept. Adding a plural ending isn't necessary. The plural meaning comes through automatically from the context and the plural verb hastand.
If I'm asking where the rest of an object is, would I still use hastand?
No. If you are looking for inanimate objects or a piece of something, Farsi prefers the singular verb ast (is). You would say baghiye kojâ ast? (Where is the rest?). We only use the plural hastand here because we are asking about missing people.
