How do we connect 'name' and 'this museum' in Farsi since there is no written word for 'of' in the sentence?
Farsi uses a grammar rule called the Ezafe to show possession. It is a short 'e' sound added to the end of the first word. You pronounce the word for name (esm) as esm-e to link it to in muze (this museum). Because it is a short vowel, it is usually not written in the Farsi alphabet.
Why does in (this) come before muze (museum)? I thought describing words come after the noun in Farsi.
Pointing words like in (this) and ân (that) are an exception! They always come before the noun they point to, and they don't use an Ezafe to connect. That is why we say in muze instead of putting it after the noun.
Is there an Ezafe between muze (museum) and zibâ (beautiful)?
No. If you wanted to talk about a 'beautiful museum' as a single noun phrase, you would use an Ezafe: muze-ye zibâ. But in this sentence, zibâ is the complement describing the subject (The name ... is beautiful). The subject phrase breaks after muze, so no Ezafe is added there.
Since our current lesson is about dâshtan (to have), how would I rewrite this to say 'This museum has a beautiful name'?
To use the verb 'to have', you would change the subject of the sentence. It would become in muze esm-e zibâ dârad (This museum has a beautiful name). The sentence we are looking at here instead uses the verb 'to be' (ast) to literally say the name is beautiful.
