لطفاً گریه نکن، نگران نباش.

Questions & Answers about لطفاً گریه نکن، نگران نباش.

How is the negative command formed in the word نکن?
It is made by adding the negative prefix ن (na-) to کن (kon), which is the present stem of the verb کردن (to do). For the informal singular 'you' command, we do not need to add any extra personal endings. So ن plus کن gives us نکن (nakon), meaning 'do not do'.
Why is 'do not be' translated as نباش? I thought the verb 'to be' was based on است.
We use forms like است (is) or هستم (I am) for stating facts. But for commands, we must use a different stem based on the infinitive بودن (to be). The present stem used for commands is باش (bash). Adding the negative prefix ن (na-) creates نباش (nabash), meaning 'do not be'.
Why does لطفاً (please) have that double-dash symbol over the last letter?
That symbol is called a tanvin and it produces an 'an' sound at the end of the word. It appears on words borrowed from Arabic. Because of this symbol, the word is pronounced 'lotfan', even though it does not end with the regular Farsi letter for 'n'.
Why does the Farsi sentence use two words (گریه نکن) for the English phrase 'do not cry'?
Farsi relies heavily on compound verbs, which combine a noun or adjective with a basic helper verb. 'To cry' is گریه کردن (literally 'to do crying'). To make a command, you only change the helper verb (کردن) into its negative command form (نکن), while the noun (گریه) stays exactly the same.
