The indefinite pronoun 'wat' (wat)

The Versatile Pronoun 'wat'

You already know wat as the question word "what". However, in conversational Dutch, it is commonly used as a lighthearted, unstressed indefinite pronoun. Depending on the context, it acts as a casual equivalent to either "something" or "a little".

'wat' as "something"

When talking about an unspecified object, wat is a shorter, more casual alternative to iets (something).

I am going to buy something for the aquarium.
Ik ga wat voor het aquarium kopen.
There is something in the filter.
Er zit wat in het filter.

'wat' as "a little" or "some"

When placed directly before an uncountable noun, wat acts as a quick equivalent to een beetje (a little). It softens your statement, implying just a small amount of something.

The pump is making a little noise.
De pomp maakt wat lawaai.
The fish need a little oxygen.
De vissen hebben wat zuurstof nodig.
We are putting a little gravel on the bottom.
We leggen wat grind op de bodem.

'wat' to Soften Actions

You can also use wat to modify a verb, showing that an action is happening or changing just "a little bit."

The temperature in the room is dropping a little.
De temperatuur in de kamer daalt wat.
The snail is eating a little of the plant.
De slak eet wat van de plant.
