Indefinite article and formal 'you' (een, u)

"A" and "an": een

Last lesson every noun arrived with de or het. To say a man rather than the man, Dutch uses een, and this one is easy: it is the same for both genders.

Which is also why nouns are learned with de or het — once you only know een man, the gender is gone.

I am a man.
Ik ben een man.
She is a woman.
Zij is een vrouw.

The polite "you": u

Use u with strangers and in professional settings. Its verb form is u bent.

You are welcome here.
U bent hier welkom.
Madam, you are the teacher.
Mevrouw, u bent de docent.
Sir, you are the doctor.
Meneer, u bent de arts.

en, ook, niet

niet comes after the thing it denies.

You are not the teacher, madam.
U bent niet de docent, mevrouw.
I am the student and you are the teacher.
Ik ben de student en u bent de docent.
