Demonstrative determiners (zo'n, zulke)

Singular Nouns: Zo'n

When you want to say "such a" to emphasize a singular noun or refer to a specific kind of thing, use zo'n. This word is actually a contraction of zo een (so a).

Such a hurricane is very extreme.
Zo'n orkaan is heel extreem.
Have you ever experienced such a storm?
Heb je ooit zo'n storm meegemaakt?

Plurals and Uncountable Nouns: Zulke

For plural nouns (like "floods") and uncountable nouns (like "heat" or "hail"), you cannot use zo'n because it contains the word een (a/an). Instead, use the word zulke (such).

Such heat in April is really bizarre.
Zulke hitte in april is echt bizar.
Have you often experienced such floods?
Hebben jullie vaak zulke overstromingen meegemaakt?

Adding Emphasis with Adjectives

You will often see adjectives placed immediately after zo'n and zulke to react to surprising, bizarre, or extreme situations. Just like normal, these adjectives will get an -e ending depending on the standard adjective rules.

I have never heard such a loud bang.
Ik heb nog nooit zo'n harde klap gehoord.
We were walking when such extreme hail began.
We wandelden toen zulke extreme hagel begon.
There was such a severe flood in the city yesterday.
