Questions & Answers about Student uči engleski.
How do we get the verb form uči?
The dictionary form of the verb is učiti (to learn). Because this is a regular -iti verb, you make the 'he', 'she', or 'it' form in the present tense by simply dropping the -ti from the end. This gives us uči.
Does uči mean 'learns' or 'is learning'?
It means both! Croatian does not have a separate continuous tense like English does. Depending on the context, uči translates to either 'learns' or 'is learning'.
Why is engleski written with a lowercase 'e'?
In Croatian, the names of languages are not capitalized. You will always write languages like engleski (English) or hrvatski (Croatian) with a lowercase starting letter, unless they are the very first word in a sentence.
Why doesn't the sentence say engleski jezik (the English language)?
You can say Student uči engleski jezik, but Croatians usually drop the word jezik (language) in everyday conversation. Just saying engleski is perfectly clear and natural.
