Questions & Answers about Učimo hrvatski.
Where is the word for "we" in this sentence?
It is built right into the verb! The base verb is učiti (to learn). To say "we learn" for regular -iti verbs, you drop the -ti and add the ending -mo. Because the ending -mo already means "we", Croatians usually skip the pronoun mi (we) completely.
Does Učimo mean "we learn" or "we are learning"?
It can mean both. Croatian doesn't have a separate "-ing" tense for actions happening right this second. Učimo hrvatski translates to both "We learn Croatian" generally and "We are learning Croatian" right now.
Why isn't hrvatski capitalized?
In Croatian, the names of languages are written with lowercase letters. You only capitalize the names of countries (like Hrvatska for Croatia) and the people from those countries.
Why don't we need to say hrvatski jezik (the Croatian language)?
Just like in English, you can drop the word for "language" and simply use the adjective hrvatski. Everyone will understand that you mean the language based on the context.
