Questions & Answers about Bez obzira na to što smo razdvojeni, naša veza funkcionira.

Why do we need to in the phrase bez obzira na to što?

Prepositions like na must attach to a noun or pronoun. They cannot directly attach to a whole clause. The pronoun to (that) acts as a dummy object or placeholder for the entire clause that follows. Literally, it translates to 'regardless of that, which is...'.

Does bez obzira na to što require a special tense or mood?

No, when stating an established fact, it is followed by the normal indicative mood. Here, we use the simple present tense smo because being separated is presented as a current reality, not a hypothetical situation.

Why is the word for separated, razdvojeni, in the plural?

Because the subject is mi (we), which is implied by the verb smo. The passive adjective razdvojen must agree with this plural subject. It takes the masculine/mixed plural ending -i here. If this were a relationship between two women, it would be razdvojene.

Could I use odnos instead of veza to say 'relationship' here?

You could, but veza is the most natural and standard word for a romantic relationship. Odnos is a broader term that translates more closely to 'relation' or 'dynamic,' and is typically used for professional, diplomatic, or family relations.
