Questions & Answers about Mršava mačka spava na suncu.
Why do we use na here when the English translation says "in" the sun?
In English we say "in the sun", but Croatian uses na (literally "on"). If you used u (in), it would sound like the cat is physically inside the glowing star in space! Always use na suncu when talking about being exposed to sunlight.
Why is the word for sun spelled suncu instead of sunce?
The preposition na requires the locative case here because it describes a static location (where the cat is sleeping). Sunce is a neuter noun, and in the locative case, neuter nouns change their ending to -u.
Could I use tanka instead of mršava to say the cat is thin?
No, because mršava specifically means "skinny" or "underweight" for living creatures like people and animals. The word tanka (thin) is used for objects, like a thin book or a thin blanket.
