From Lesson 109:Months of the year·Croatian

Questions & Answers about Siječanj, veljača i ožujak su mjeseci.

Why aren't veljača and ožujak capitalized?
Unlike in English, months of the year in Croatian are written with lowercase letters. Siječanj is only capitalized here because it is the first word of the sentence.
I noticed veljača ends in -a. Are all months the same gender?
Good catch! Most months in Croatian are masculine, including siječanj and ožujak. However, veljača (February) is feminine because it ends in -a.
Croatian month names look completely different from English ones. Is there a trick to remembering them?
It helps to know that traditional Croatian month names describe what happens in nature during that time. For example, siječanj comes from the word for cutting wood to stay warm, and ožujak comes from the word for a lie (laž) because March weather is deceitful and unpredictable!
Does the word mjeseci have any other meanings?
Yes! The singular form is mjesec, and it means both "month" and "moon". You will always be able to tell which one is meant based on the context of the sentence.
