Asking Yes/No Questions
To ask a "yes or no" question in Croatian, use the long form of the verb "to be" combined with the question particle li at the very beginning of the sentence.
| Pronoun | Question Form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ja | jesam li | am I? |
| ti | jesi li | are you? (singular) |
| on / ona / ono | je li | is he / she / it? |
| mi | jesmo li | are we? |
| vi | jeste li | are you? (plural/formal) |
| oni / one / ona | jesu li | are they? |
| Is the coffee expensive? | Je li kava skupa? |
| Are you free now? | Jesi li sada slobodan? |
| Are the rooms available? | Jesu li sobe slobodne? |
Forming the Question
The je li structure replaces the standard short verb. The subject and the rest of the sentence simply follow.
| Is this a cheap hotel? | Je li ovo jeftin hotel? |
| Is the tea cold? | Je li čaj hladan? |
| Is the weather nice today? | Je li danas lijepo vrijeme? |
Answering with "No"
When replying negatively, start with ne (no), followed by the negative form of "to be" (nisam, nisi, nije, etc.).
| Are you a teacher? | Jeste li Vi učitelj? |
| No, I am not a teacher. | Ne, nisam učitelj. |
| Are they students? | Jesu li oni studenti? |
| No, they are not students. | Ne, oni nisu studenti. |
