Bringing Things Together
Just as the prefix raz- indicates taking things apart, the prefix s- (or sa-) does exactly the opposite. It expresses bringing things together, assembling parts, or converging into a single unit. This prefix is incredibly useful when talking about DIY crafting, building, or repairing things.
The prefix takes two forms depending on the first letter of the root word, purely for ease of pronunciation:
- s- is the standard form used before most letters.
- sa- is used when the root word begins with consonants like s, z, š, or ž, or certain heavy consonant clusters where a single s- would be too hard to pronounce.
Assembling Parts
When you put together components to build something, such as a scale model (maketa), you are literally placing the parts together into one object. Notice how the verb sastavljati uses the sa- prefix because the root starts with the st- cluster:
| I like assembling scale models from plywood. | Volim sastavljati makete od šperploče. |
Another common verb for assembling or putting together is sklopiti. Because the root starts with k, the standard s- prefix is easy to pronounce:
| After we assembled both scale models, we took the screws. | Nakon što smo sklopili obje makete, uzeli smo vijke. |
Tying and Stitching
The concept of bringing things together applies perfectly to textiles and threads. If you are sewing pieces of fabric into one item, the verb šiti (to sew) becomes sašiti (to sew together). Here, the sa- form is required to avoid the awkward sš- sound combination.
| Can you sew anything together with this thread? | Možeš li sašiti bilo što ovom niti? |
Similarly, if you need to connect the ends of a thread (nit), you tie them together. Using the standard s- prefix before the voiced consonant v, vezati (to tie) becomes svezati:
| We must tie both ends of this thread together. | Moramo svezati oba kraja ove niti. |
Gluing It All Together
Whether you are working with plywood (šperploča) or other craft materials, you often use glue (ljepilo) to permanently join pieces. By adding s- to lijepiti (to glue), we get slijepiti — to glue together into a single, unified piece.
| She glued the pieces of plywood together with strong glue. | Slijepila je komade šperploče jakim ljepilom. |
