Actions as Concepts (-nje)
In English, we often turn verbs into nouns using "-ing" to talk about an action as an abstract concept (for example, "breathe" becomes "breathing"). In Croatian, you can form these verbal nouns (glagolska imenica) by adding the suffix -nje.
Because they end in -e, these nouns are always neuter. Any adjective describing them must take a neuter ending (usually -o or -e).
| Deep breathing is good for the health. | Duboko disanje je dobro za zdravlje. |
| Regular exercising helps against stress. | Redovito vježbanje pomaže protiv stresa. |
Using Verbal Nouns with Prepositions
Since they are true nouns, verbal nouns change their endings depending on their role in the sentence.
When following prepositions that trigger the accusative case—like za (for) or na (on/about)—neuter nouns keep their original -nje form.
| For reading you need a quiet place. | Za čitanje ti treba mirno mjesto. |
When following prepositions that require the genitive case—such as bez (without), prije (before), or zbog (because of)—the ending changes from -nje to -nja.
| There is no relaxation without silence. | Nema opuštanja bez tišine. |
| Before sleeping I always read a book. | Prije spavanja uvijek čitam knjigu. |
Nouns Modifying Nouns
When a verbal noun is followed by the target of its action (like "acceptance of the truth" or "writing of a diary"), that target noun takes the genitive case.
| Acceptance of the truth is always hard. | Prihvaćanje istine je uvijek teško. |
| Writing a diary is useful for relaxation. | Pisanje dnevnika je korisno za opuštanje. |
Talking about Wellbeing
Verbal nouns are the perfect tool for discussing mental health, daily routines, and self-care.
| The psychologist advises relaxation and healthy sleep. | Psiholog savjetuje opuštanje i zdravo spavanje. |
| Therapy is a good solution for bad sleeping. | Terapija je dobro rješenje za loše spavanje. |
