Whose mom? The dative knows
With family and people close to you, Croatian often marks the OWNER with a dative clitic instead of a possessive: | with possessive | with dative | | --- | --- | | Moja mama je dobro. | Mama mi je dobro. | | Kako je tvoja majka? | Kako ti je majka? |
| My mom is well. | Mama mi je dobro. |
Asking after someone
This is the everyday way to ask after somebody's family:
| How are your children? | Kako su ti djeca? |
The clitic sits in second position, exactly where sam, je and se go — one more resident of the slot you already know.
