Present Participles as Adjectives
In Croatian, the present active participle is formed by adding -ći to the third-person plural present form of an imperfective verb (e.g., osvježavaju + ći = osvježavajući).
These words are very commonly used as adjectives to describe an ongoing characteristic. They perfectly match English adjectives ending in -ing, like "refreshing" or "exhausting".
Like all adjectives, they change their ending to match the gender of the noun. The dictionary form ends in -ći for masculine nouns, -ća for feminine, and -će for neuter nouns.
Declension
When functioning as an adjective, a participle declines through all the cases to agree with the noun it modifies. Because the stem ends in the soft consonant ć, it strictly follows the soft-stem adjective declension.
For example, masculine and neuter nouns will take endings like -eg in the genitive case, rather than the hard-stem -og.
Describing Situations and Experiences
These adjectives are ideal for describing tasks, events, and their emotional impact.
When placed after the verb biti (to be), the adjective still agrees with the subject. If you are making a general statement about an action or an impersonal "it" (where there is no specific noun), the adjective takes the neuter singular form (-će).
